30 Year Anniversary

The Stroud Building Design Association has now been going for 30 years. Originally set up to provide CPD for small practices involved in the design of buildings working in the Stroud area, there have been many members over the years.

Now, post COVID, and providers of CPD taking their courses on-line, find speakers is becoming more difficult. However, there are still a number of professionals in a range of disciplines who meet up for networking (second Wednesday of each month) at the Stroud Brewery.

See calendar for dates and times of events.

Stroud Preservation Trust – Chapels of Rest

SPT are discussing taking on the former Chapels of Rest at the Bisley Road cemetery in Stroud. This has long been redundant and requires numerous repairs and updating improvements to enable more beneficial uses. Initially essential repairs and updating of building services will be considered to enable temporary community, art and performing uses with longer term improvements and occupation conditional on future funding availability.

Planning permission granted for “Missing Mile” of historic canal restoration

Permission has been provided to complete the “missing mile” of the Stroudwater Canal and will include the construction of a new canal channel from John Robinson (Westfield) Lock at Eastington near Westfield Bridge to connect with the new channel already constructed at the A38 roundabout.

Stroud Water Canal "Missing Mile"

The route diverts away from the historic route of the canal, as this original route has been built on at the motorway junction, highway depot and A38 roundabout and link road. The new canal channel diverts south from Westfield bridge before going under the motorway, sharing the existing River Frome underpass with a dividing wall which will act as a flood barrier.

Cotswold Canals Trust is currently scaling up its restoration volunteer teams with the skills, equipment and resources required to deliver this project. Anyone interested in volunteering on this historic project to restore the Stroudwater Navigation can find out more at cotswoldcanals.org/volunteer/volunteering-opportunities/
